Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 in promotional cash back to customers who buy a Surface Laptop Ultra and trade in an eligible MacBook Pro. The headline figure sounds like an instant discount, but it is a post-purchase trade-in promotion with strict deadlines, device-condition requirements and an inspection before payment.

The offer runs from October 7 through November 23, 2026, through the Microsoft Store online in the United States and Canada. It arrives alongside the $2,599.99 Surface Laptop Ultra, Microsoft’s Nvidia RTX Spark-powered workstation laptop.

The $1,000 is not an instant checkout discount

Microsoft describes the promotion as “up to $1,000 cash back” after the purchase of a qualifying new Surface Laptop Ultra and the trade-in of a qualifying device. The amount is not automatically deducted from the laptop’s price at checkout.

Customers must buy an eligible Surface Laptop Ultra during the promotion period, complete Microsoft’s online trade-in process and submit proof of purchase. Microsoft says the promotional amount varies according to the Surface configuration purchased and the value of the trade-in.

That means shoppers should not build a budget around receiving the full $1,000 until the trade-in tool confirms the device and Microsoft’s trade-in partner accepts it after inspection. The company also says reimbursements and final valuations are subject to Teladvance’s approval.

Important dates and eligibility rules

Microsoft’s official Surface Laptop Ultra page lists the following conditions:

  • The new laptop must be purchased between October 7 and November 23, 2026.
  • The promotion is available through the Microsoft Store online in the United States and Canada.
  • The customer must mail the qualifying trade-in device within 15 days of completing the online trade-in process.
  • The customer must own the trade-in device.
  • The computer must power on and its battery must hold a charge without remaining plugged in.
  • It must be fully functional, with no cracked screen, liquid damage, missing components or broken warranty seal.
  • The device cannot remain password protected.
  • Microsoft says the original charger, accessories and hard drive must be included.

The offer is limited to one per customer, does not apply to earlier purchases and cannot be transferred or exchanged for gift cards or store credit. Microsoft also says it may not be combined with other offers.

What happens if the MacBook fails inspection?

The trade-in value depends on the model and its condition after inspection. A device that does not meet the requirements may be returned or recycled, according to Microsoft. A recycled device does not qualify for cash back, and completed trade-ins are final.

Before shipping a MacBook, owners should photograph its condition, confirm the battery works unplugged, back up their data, sign out of Apple services and erase personal information. The computer must not remain locked with a password, but users should follow Microsoft’s trade-in instructions carefully rather than mailing an unlocked computer that still contains personal files.

Keeping the tracking number and proof of purchase is also sensible because the promotional payment arrives after Microsoft’s partner receives and evaluates the trade-in.

Does the deal make the Surface Laptop Ultra affordable?

Even the maximum advertised cash back would leave a substantial cost. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599.99, while the highest configuration approaches $5,900. It is aimed at developers, creators and researchers who need Nvidia CUDA support, large unified-memory options or local AI performance.

Microsoft says the RTX Spark platform can combine up to a 20-core Nvidia Grace CPU, a Blackwell RTX GPU and 128GB of unified memory. Those specifications are unusual in a portable Windows machine, but most office, school and everyday users do not need them.

Our earlier Surface Laptop Ultra specifications guide covers the configurations, ports, 15-inch display, release date and important limitations. The trade-in offer changes the purchase calculation for some MacBook Pro owners, but it does not turn the Ultra into a mainstream-value laptop.

Who should consider the promotion?

The offer is most relevant to a MacBook Pro owner who already planned to move to Windows and can benefit from the Surface Laptop Ultra’s Nvidia hardware. It may be less attractive for someone who could sell a recent MacBook privately for more, needs Apple-only software, or is uncertain about Windows-on-Arm compatibility for specialized applications.

Before ordering, compare three numbers: Microsoft’s confirmed trade-in estimate, realistic private-sale value and the exact Surface configuration price. Also verify that every essential application and peripheral works on the new platform.

The practical takeaway

Microsoft’s “up to $1,000” message is real, but it is a maximum promotional benefit—not a guaranteed discount for every MacBook Pro. The narrow purchase window, 15-day mailing deadline and condition rules make preparation important.

For eligible professionals already committed to the Surface Laptop Ultra, the offer could lower a very high purchase price. Everyone else should compare the trade-in valuation carefully and wait for independent laptop reviews before treating the promotion as a reason to switch platforms.
