Sony is bringing transparent plastic back to PlayStation hardware with the Prism Collection, a set of see-through DualSense wireless controllers and matching PlayStation 5 console covers. The three finishes—Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray—are scheduled to begin shipping on February 4, 2027.
The new controllers carry a recommended price of $84.99 in the US, while the matching PS5 console covers are priced at $74.99. Preorders open November 10, 2026. The important caveat is simple: Sony has announced a visual redesign, not a new controller generation. Buyers are paying for the transparent shell and finish rather than new buttons, longer battery life or added gameplay features.
What the Prism Collection changes
The collection’s main idea is visibility. Sony says a high-gloss clear finish extends across the back of the DualSense, exposing part of the structure beneath the shell. A metallic middle cover separates the transparent sections and gives each color a more uniform look.
Flare Orange is the loudest option, with overlapping clear plastic that can take on a rosy tint. Emerald Green uses a darker, hunter-green treatment, while Graphite Gray is the most restrained. All three have matching console covers, so owners can coordinate the controller with the PS5 rather than mixing a transparent gamepad with the standard white shell.
According to Sony’s design team, the styling deliberately revisits the translucent electronics trend of the late 1990s. That reference will be familiar to anyone who remembers clear handhelds, controllers and desktop accessories from that era, but the Prism designs keep the PS5’s current shape and control layout.
What does not appear to change
Sony’s announcement does not identify any functional upgrades for the Prism models. They remain DualSense wireless controllers, so the familiar platform features—adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, motion controls, a built-in microphone and USB-C charging—are the relevant baseline. Sony did not announce a new battery specification, revised sticks or extra rear controls.
That distinction matters because the transparent housing can make the product look more extensively redesigned than it is. This is not a DualSense Edge alternative and it is not a mid-generation hardware refresh. Players who already have enough working controllers can treat Prism as a style purchase, while anyone who needs an additional gamepad gets the standard DualSense experience in a limited-look shell.
Price, preorder time and release date
Sony lists the Prism DualSense at $84.99 / ¥12,480 / €84.99 / £74.99. The console covers are listed at $74.99 / ¥9,980 / €74.99 / £64.99. Actual retailer prices can vary.
US preorders begin on November 10 at 7:00 a.m. Pacific / 10:00 a.m. Eastern through PlayStation Direct. In the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, direct orders begin at 10:00 a.m. local time. Participating retailers may also take preorders, depending on the country.
The collection launches starting February 4, 2027, although Sony warns that exact dates and availability may differ by region. The controllers are described as a global release. The matching covers are more constrained: they will be sold directly by PlayStation where that store operates, and Sony says other regions may receive limited quantities through selected retailers.
Who should consider one
The strongest case is for buyers who already planned to purchase a controller and prefer the transparent look. The $84.99 price positions Prism as a premium colorway, but it remains well below the more specialized DualSense Edge. Collectors may also value having a controller and console cover in the same finish.
For everyone else, patience is reasonable. Sony has not said how limited the controllers will be, and the console covers may be harder to find outside PlayStation Direct markets. There is also no evidence yet that the glossy translucent surface will hide fingerprints or fine scratches better than existing shells. Those are practical details that photographs cannot settle.
Compatibility is another point to check before ordering a cover. Sony’s announcement refers broadly to PS5 console covers, but buyers should confirm the exact supported console model on the product listing. PS5 hardware has appeared in different chassis designs, and exterior plates are not automatically interchangeable across every version.
The practical takeaway
The Prism Collection is a nostalgia-driven cosmetic option with unusually clear pricing and timing: preorder on November 10, launch beginning February 4, and $84.99 for a controller. Its value depends almost entirely on whether the transparent finish appeals to you.
Nothing in Sony’s announcement suggests owners of a standard DualSense need to upgrade for performance. But for someone already shopping for an extra controller—or building a color-matched PS5 setup—the three finishes offer a more distinctive choice than another solid-color shell.
