Konami has made the original Castlevania free on iPhone, iPad and Android to mark the series’ 40th anniversary. The promotion runs through October 24, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Japan Standard Time, and the important part is that people who download the game during the offer can continue to download and play it after the promotional window closes.
What is free, and for how long?
The anniversary release is a direct mobile port of the original NES game, not a remake or a new free-to-play version. It can be claimed at no charge from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Konami’s promotion page lists the offer as September 25 through October 24 at 11:59 p.m. JST. Because that deadline arrives earlier than October 24 ends in many Western time zones, interested players should claim the app by October 23 to avoid a last-minute time-zone surprise.
Konami also says anyone who downloads the game during the promotion will still be able to download and play it afterward. That is more useful than a limited free weekend, although the company has not promised that the app will receive indefinite compatibility updates for future versions of iOS or Android.
What the mobile version includes
The app recreates the 8-bit adventure in which Simon Belmont crosses Dracula’s castle with his whip and a small collection of sub-weapons. The mobile controls use a visual directional pad and on-screen action buttons. Konami says the game works offline, so an internet connection should not be required after installation.
Apple’s listing puts the iOS download at just 6.2MB and requires iOS or iPadOS 15.6 or later. It lists English and Japanese language support and a 9+ age rating. Both store listings identify the app as free, and both privacy disclosures say the developer does not collect or share user data through this app.
Touch controls are the main unknown
This is still a demanding action-platform game designed for a physical NES controller. On-screen buttons can obscure part of a small display and do not provide the tactile feedback of a D-pad. Konami’s store description does not advertise comprehensive external-controller support.
Early Google Play reviews report a mixture of experiences, including complaints about the small game window, audio delay and inconsistent gamepad support. Those comments are anecdotal user reports, not findings from our own testing, and may vary by phone and controller. Players who mainly want the game for serious runs may prefer one of Konami’s console or PC collections, while the free mobile version is an easy way to sample the original without paying first.
Why this release matters
The first Castlevania launched in Japan in 1986 before reaching the international NES market in 1987. It established the core conflict between the Belmont family and Dracula and helped define the series’ mix of deliberate platforming, gothic monsters and memorable music.
The free app is one part of Konami’s wider 40th-anniversary campaign. The publisher is also promoting anniversary merchandise, music releases and the upcoming Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. That new game is scheduled for October 15 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch, according to its official site.

For anyone curious about the series’ starting point, the answer is simple: claim it while it is free, even if you do not plan to play immediately. The download is tiny, it works offline, and Konami says promotional users retain access after the deadline.
