OnePlus has confirmed an important display upgrade for its next flagship. The OnePlus 16 will support what the company calls a global 165Hz ultra-high refresh rate, meaning the higher refresh rate is intended to work across the system rather than only inside a limited group of supported games.
OnePlus China president Li Jie confirmed the feature on September 17. The company also says the OnePlus 16 will be the first phone to ship with ColorOS 17.
Why system-wide 165Hz matters
The OnePlus 15 already had a 165Hz-capable display, but the fastest mode was initially limited to selected situations. Most of the interface and many apps operated at lower refresh rates. OnePlus later expanded 165Hz support to additional apps, but it still was not the seamless system-wide implementation some users expected.
The OnePlus 16 is designed to address that limitation. A broader 165Hz mode could make scrolling, animations and supported apps feel more responsive instead of reserving the maximum refresh rate mainly for gaming.
There is still a battery question
Higher refresh rates require more display updates every second and can increase power consumption. The practical value of OnePlus’s implementation will therefore depend on whether the phone can intelligently reduce its refresh rate when displaying static content.
Until independent testing is available, it is too early to know how much difference the 165Hz mode will make to battery life or everyday responsiveness.
ColorOS 17 comes out of the box
OnePlus has also confirmed that the OnePlus 16 will be the first handset to launch with ColorOS 17. Oppo introduced ColorOS 17 at its September 17 developer conference, focusing on smoother rendering, a new Fluid Design interface and more proactive AI features.
What we still don’t know
OnePlus has not yet provided a complete global launch schedule or final specification sheet for the OnePlus 16. Several hardware details circulating online remain leaks rather than confirmed specifications, so they should be treated cautiously until the company announces the phone formally.
For now, the system-wide 165Hz display is one of the clearest confirmed upgrades — and potentially one of the most noticeable for users coming from the OnePlus 15.
