Apple’s first foldable iPhone is a $1,999 phone, but the purchase price is only part of the ownership calculation. Apple’s U.S. repair estimator now lists an inner-display repair at $999 without AppleCare+ and “other damage” at $1,499. For anyone considering an iPhone Duo preorder, those figures make protection costs and repair terms unusually important.
The iPhone Duo is available to preorder now and reaches customers on October 23, 2026. Apple sells it in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations, with U.S. prices ranging from $1,999 to $3,199. Apple describes the new model as its largest iPhone display in a foldable body, but buyers should also understand how the company separates surface wear, display damage and broader device damage when it calculates a repair.
Apple’s estimated iPhone Duo repair prices
Apple’s official iPhone service estimator says final pricing depends on inspection. The published U.S. estimates reported for an iPhone Duo without AppleCare+ are:
- Cover-layer damage: $49
- Back-glass damage: $199
- Battery service: $229
- Rear-camera damage: $229
- Outer-display damage: $379
- Outer display plus back glass: $509
- Inner-display damage: $999
- Other damage: $1,499
These are estimates for service directly from Apple, not guaranteed quotes. Apple says it must inspect the phone before giving a personalized price. Taxes and shipping can add to the bill, and Apple Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees.
Why the $49 cover-layer option matters
The most interesting line is the least expensive one. The inner display uses a specialized nano-texture finish and a replaceable top layer. That gives Apple a way to address some surface damage or wear without automatically replacing the complete folding display.
However, a damaged cover layer is not the same as a broken OLED panel. If the underlying inner screen fails, Apple’s estimate rises to $999. Buyers should not assume that every scratch, crease concern or impact will qualify for the inexpensive cover-layer service; Apple decides the repair category after inspection.
AppleCare+ changes the risk calculation
With AppleCare+, Apple’s estimator lists battery service at no additional charge when the battery meets the plan’s service criteria, while inner-display damage and other accidental damage are listed at $99 service fees. That is a large reduction compared with the $999 and $1,499 out-of-coverage estimates.
Apple says AppleCare plans cover accidental damage from handling, subject to service fees, deductibles, exclusions and the plan terms. Theft-and-loss coverage is available only in supported regions. The plan itself also costs money, so the right comparison is not “free repair versus paid repair”; it is the price of coverage plus any incident fee versus accepting the full out-of-pocket risk.
For a conventional phone, some buyers reasonably skip extended coverage. A first-generation foldable with a $999 inner-screen estimate presents a different risk profile, especially for anyone who plans to keep it for several years.
What buyers get for the $1,999 starting price
Apple’s October 15 preorder update confirms a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, both designed around a folding form factor. The phone uses the A20 Pro chip, a dual-battery architecture and iOS 27 features such as Split View multitasking.
The camera system includes 48MP main and ultrawide cameras, plus an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen. Apple rates the phone IP68 for water and dust resistance, but it also warns that resistance is not permanent and can decline with normal wear. Liquid damage is not covered by the standard warranty.
Storage prices are:
- 256GB: $1,999
- 512GB: $2,199
- 1TB: $2,599
- 2TB: $3,199
Apple opened preorders on October 16 and says availability begins October 23 in the United States and more than 70 other markets. A further 28 countries and regions follow on October 30.
Practical buying advice before checkout
Before ordering, compare four numbers rather than only the advertised monthly payment:
- The full retail price. Carrier credits are often spread across a long installment term and may stop if service is cancelled.
- The protection-plan cost. Review AppleCare+ and theft-and-loss terms for your state and chosen payment period.
- The service fee. Accidental-damage claims can still carry an incident fee even with coverage.
- Your maximum uninsured loss. The published $999 inner-display and $1,499 other-damage estimates show what a serious accident could mean without coverage.
A protective case may reduce everyday risk, but it cannot eliminate hinge, display or impact damage. Buyers should also check whether a credit card, carrier plan or household policy duplicates any protection before paying for overlapping coverage.
The bottom line
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s most ambitious iPhone redesign in years, and its foldable display creates capabilities a normal iPhone cannot match. It also brings unusually high repair exposure. Apple’s replaceable cover layer is a useful design decision, but it does not turn a $999 inner-screen repair into a $49 fix.
For early adopters, AppleCare+ deserves to be treated as part of the purchase budget rather than an afterthought. Everyone else may want to wait for independent durability testing and real-world repair experience after the October 23 release.
