Gears of War: E-Day is now available worldwide, bringing Microsoft’s cover-based shooter series back to the beginning of the Locust invasion. The game launched on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam, with access also offered through Game Pass.

The standard edition costs $69.99 in the United States. It is not an Xbox One release, and PlayStation 5 is not among the launch platforms listed by Microsoft. For current Xbox and gaming-PC owners, the bigger question is what has changed beyond the earlier setting.

A prequel built for current hardware

E-Day takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago are younger soldiers caught in the opening hours of Emergence Day, when the subterranean Locust Horde attacks the world of Sera. The story follows three days and nights in the city of Kalona rather than continuing the timeline after Gears 5.

Developer The Coalition rebuilt the game in Unreal Engine 5. Microsoft advertises 4K resolution and frame rates up to 60 fps across the campaign and multiplayer, although those targets require compatible hardware and displays. Actual PC performance will depend on the graphics card, processor, memory, resolution and quality settings.

The official Xbox launch guide describes a primarily linear campaign with larger pockets of explorable space. Optional routes can lead to side missions, story collectibles and weapon modifications. Movement has also expanded beyond the series’ familiar snap-to-cover rhythm: players can jump, vault, slide and climb to reach different angles during combat.

Campaign, co-op and multiplayer options

The campaign can be played solo, while two-player split-screen is available on Xbox consoles. Microsoft also lists online play for up to four players across supported modes. The package includes the returning competitive Versus mode and Horde Siege, a cooperative wave-survival mode built around larger maps, shared objectives, class roles and boss encounters.

  • Campaign: Marcus and Dom’s origin story during the first Locust attacks
  • Local co-op: two-player split-screen on console
  • Online play: campaign and multiplayer options for up to four players where supported
  • Horde Siege: four-player squads with Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher roles
  • Versus: ranked and social 4v4 playlists
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 5

Online multiplayer requires a Game Pass subscription tier that includes console multiplayer. Microsoft also warns that an initial download is required and future updates may need additional storage, so the boxed version should not be treated as an entirely offline, install-and-play disc.

Where you can play it

Gears of War: E-Day is sold through Xbox for Series X|S and Windows PC, and through Steam. Cloud play is available through Game Pass Ultimate, while Nvidia GeForce NOW is another option for supported PC storefront purchases.

The title supports Xbox Play Anywhere. A qualifying digital Xbox purchase can be used on both an Xbox console and Windows PC without buying a second copy, with progress designed to follow the same Microsoft account. That benefit does not mean the Steam version automatically includes an Xbox console license.

Game Pass members should check the catalog and their subscription tier before purchasing. Game availability, cloud access and online multiplayer benefits can differ by plan and region.

What reviewers are finding

We have not performed hands-on testing. A published Creative Bloq review praised the more flexible movement, destruction, weapon modifications and detailed world, while criticizing some repetitive side content, damage-heavy enemies and frustrating one-hit encounters.

That distinction matters for returning players. E-Day appears to broaden the established formula rather than replace it. Cover shooting, active reloads, the Gnasher shotgun and chainsaw-equipped Lancer remain central, but the larger combat spaces and added vertical movement give players more ways to flank or escape.

The content is also deliberately intense. The franchise is known for graphic violence, horror imagery and heavy combat. Parents and players sensitive to gore should consult the game’s regional age rating before buying.

Price, editions and practical limits

The standard edition is listed at $69.99. Players who paid for the Premium Edition or Premium Upgrade received early access beginning October 1, but the worldwide standard release is now live, so paying extra is no longer necessary merely to start playing immediately.

There are several costs beyond the base game to consider. Online console multiplayer may require a subscription, cloud play requires a compatible plan or service, and PC players need hardware capable of meeting their chosen resolution and frame-rate target. The advertised 4K and 60 fps figures are maximum capabilities, not a guarantee for every console mode, PC configuration or display.

Why this launch matters

E-Day is the first new main Gears release in several years and one of Microsoft’s largest first-party launches of 2026. Its same-day arrival on Xbox, PC, Steam and Game Pass gives players several ways to enter, but the absence of Xbox One and PlayStation 5 at launch narrows the audience to current Xbox hardware and PC.

For longtime fans, the practical appeal is a familiar combat system with modern traversal, expanded co-op and a story centered on an event the series has referenced for two decades. Newcomers do not need to know the later timeline, because the prequel begins where the central conflict starts.
