Volkswagen has confirmed the name of its next electric compact SUV: ID. Tiguan. The new model is scheduled for a world premiere in early October 2026 and a market launch beginning in 2027. It will take over from the ID.4 and coupe-styled ID.5, while the existing gasoline and plug-in-hybrid Tiguan remain on sale alongside it.
The announcement matters because it is more than a badge change. Volkswagen is moving away from less familiar numbered EV names and connecting its electric models to names buyers already recognize. But this is still a preview, not a full launch: price, battery capacity, driving range, motor output, charging speed and U.S. availability have not been announced.
What Volkswagen confirmed
Volkswagen showed the ID. Tiguan as a camouflaged near-production vehicle on September 28, 2026. The company describes it as the electric successor to the ID.4 and ID.5 and says sales will start in 2027 after the full reveal in early October.
The ID. Tiguan will not replace every version of the current Tiguan. Volkswagen says the electric model will be offered alongside the combustion-engine and plug-in-hybrid Tiguan. That gives shoppers a familiar name with several powertrain choices instead of forcing the electric version into a separate numbered family.
The published image shows a conventionally shaped five-door SUV with a relatively upright roof, short front overhang and a practical-looking rear cargo area. Because the vehicle is still wrapped in camouflage, smaller design details may change or remain hidden until the official unveiling.
Why the Tiguan name is important
The model follows the naming approach Volkswagen has already signaled with the ID. Polo and ID. Cross. “ID.” still identifies the battery-electric version, while the second half of the badge borrows a familiar model name.
That should make the range easier to understand. “ID. Tiguan” immediately tells a shopper that the vehicle is positioned as an electric counterpart to Volkswagen’s compact SUV. By comparison, “ID.4” does not communicate size or body style unless the buyer already knows Volkswagen’s EV lineup.
Volkswagen says it has delivered more than 950,000 ID.4 and ID.5 vehicles worldwide since 2021. The new name therefore does not erase an unsuccessful product line; it reframes a large existing EV business around a badge that has broader recognition.
What happens to the ID.4 and ID.5?
The ID. Tiguan is described as the successor to both models, so buyers should expect the two current nameplates to give way as the new vehicle reaches individual markets. Volkswagen has not published a country-by-country phaseout schedule, however, and existing ID.4 and ID.5 inventory will not disappear overnight.
The company also has not said whether the ID.5’s sloping-roof format will return as a separate ID. Tiguan variant. For now, Volkswagen has shown only the more upright SUV pictured here.
The most important specifications are still unknown
Volkswagen has not yet confirmed:
- battery sizes or estimated driving range;
- single-motor and dual-motor configurations;
- horsepower, acceleration or towing capacity;
- maximum DC fast-charging speed;
- interior dimensions, cargo capacity or final equipment;
- pricing, trim levels or market-specific sale dates; or
- whether the ID. Tiguan will be sold in the United States.
Those omissions make direct comparisons with the current ID.4 premature. The October premiere should fill in at least some of the technical gaps, but regional pricing and availability may follow later.
Who should pay attention?
Current ID.4 and ID.5 owners do not need to act on this announcement; Volkswagen has not announced an end to software support or service for either vehicle. For people considering a new electric compact SUV in 2027, however, the ID. Tiguan may be worth adding to the comparison list once its range, charging and price are official.
The practical question will be whether the new vehicle improves the everyday fundamentals rather than just the name. Range in cold weather, charging consistency, cabin controls, cargo space and software reliability will matter more than the badge. None of those can be judged from a camouflaged prototype or announcement photos.
Launch timing and availability
The full world premiere is planned for early October 2026, and Volkswagen says the market launch will begin in 2027. The company has not specified which country will receive it first or confirmed a North American version.
