Samsung Display has shown its next-generation M16 OLED technology, and the eye-catching number is enormous: up to 10,000 nits of brightness in small areas of the panel.
That figure will grab headlines, but the more useful improvement for everyday smartphones may be efficiency.
10,000 nits does not mean your whole screen stays that bright
Peak-brightness claims generally apply to a small portion of the display under specific conditions. A phone cannot run its entire screen continuously at 10,000 nits without serious heat and power consequences.
The technology could still improve HDR highlights and outdoor visibility, but buyers should not compare the peak number directly with normal full-screen brightness.
The 30% efficiency gain is more interesting
Samsung says the M16 generation can be around 30% more efficient than its previous M14 OLED technology. A more efficient display can reduce power use or give manufacturers room to increase brightness without the same battery penalty.
Because the display is one of the biggest power consumers in a smartphone, improvements here can affect battery life even when processor efficiency stays the same.
Phones come first
The new OLED technology is aimed at smartphones first, although advances in materials and panel efficiency can eventually influence larger OLED products as well.
What to watch
The important question will be how phone makers tune M16 panels in shipping devices. Real-world brightness, power use, color accuracy and thermal behavior matter more than a laboratory peak figure.
