MediaTek has unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, its first flagship smartphone processor built on TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process. Announced on September 15, 2026, the chip is designed for the next wave of premium Android phones, with MediaTek putting particular emphasis on on-device AI, power efficiency, gaming and faster memory and storage.
Why the Dimensity 9600 Pro matters
The move to a new manufacturing generation is important, but the bigger story for phone buyers is what MediaTek is trying to do with the extra performance and efficiency. The company says the 9600 Pro uses a new 2+3+3 “All Big Core” CPU configuration and can deliver up to 17% higher single-core performance and up to 15% higher multi-core performance compared with the previous generation.
MediaTek also claims a 61% reduction in multi-core power consumption. Those are manufacturer figures, so real-world battery life will still depend heavily on each phone maker’s cooling system, display, modem configuration, battery capacity and software.
On-device AI gets a major upgrade
The Dimensity 9600 Pro includes MediaTek’s NPU 1090 and a dual-NPU architecture. According to MediaTek, it delivers 51% higher large-language-model prefill performance and 55% more token generation per watt. It also supports complex on-device AI applications using models up to 30 billion parameters.
That matters because more smartphone AI is moving from remote cloud servers onto the phone itself. Local processing can make some AI features faster, reduce dependence on an internet connection and potentially keep more personal data on the device.
MediaTek describes the platform as supporting “agentic AI,” meaning future phone assistants could do more than answer a question. With the right software and permissions, they could analyze information stored on the device, understand context and take actions for the user.
Faster gaming and graphics
The chip also introduces the G2-Ultra NX GPU. MediaTek says it offers up to 27% higher peak graphics performance, 24% lower power consumption at peak performance and 18% faster ray tracing. The platform supports gaming at up to 185 frames per second under supported configurations.
Again, those numbers should not be treated as guaranteed phone performance. Sustained gaming speed depends heavily on how aggressively each handset manages heat.
LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 arrive
Another notable part of the platform is support for LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage. Faster memory and storage can improve app loading, multitasking and data-heavy AI workloads, although actual speeds will depend on the components selected by individual phone manufacturers.
Which phones will get the new chip?
MediaTek says the first smartphones powered by its new processors will launch soon. Reuters notes that the company has supplied major Chinese smartphone manufacturers including Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. Exact models, regional availability and prices have not yet been confirmed.
MediaTek also introduced the Dimensity 9600M, a 3nm processor aimed at a broader section of the flagship smartphone market.
What this means for Android buyers
MediaTek has spent years moving beyond its reputation as primarily a supplier of mainstream smartphone processors. The Dimensity 9600 Pro is another attempt to compete directly at the top of the Android market, where Qualcomm has traditionally been especially strong.
For consumers, more competition at the flagship level is generally useful. Phone manufacturers have another high-end platform to choose from, while chip companies have more incentive to improve efficiency, graphics, cameras and AI performance.
But the “2nm” label alone should not determine a buying decision. The first independent tests of retail Dimensity 9600 Pro phones will be far more revealing. Battery life, sustained gaming performance, heat, camera processing and the usefulness of the new AI features are the things worth watching.
