Your backup is not finished until you test a restore

A backup is useful only if you can recover the right file when the original disappears. Seeing a green check mark or a recent backup date is reassuring, but it does not prove that your most important folders were included, the drive is readable or your account credentials still work.

Apple notes that old backups are deleted as the backup disk fills, so check whether the available history matches your needs. A drive that has been unplugged for weeks is not providing current protection.

A safe monthly restore test

  1. Create a folder named “Backup Test” with a text file and one small photo.
  2. Run or wait for the normal backup and confirm completion.
  3. Rename or move the originals so the test represents a missing-file situation.
  4. Use the backup tool to restore them to a separate temporary folder.
  5. Open both files and compare their contents.
  6. Delete the temporary test only after the result is confirmed.

Testing one file cannot guarantee that an entire computer can be recovered, but it catches common failures: the wrong drive, excluded folders, expired credentials, corrupted media or a backup job that stopped silently.

Protect the backup itself

  • Use encryption for portable drives that contain personal data, and store the recovery key separately.
