Not sure whether a USB-C cable supports charging, a monitor, or fast data transfers? Use this quick decision guide before buying. USB-C describes the connector shape, not guaranteed capabilities.
Find the right USB-C connection
I need to charge a laptop or phone
Check the device’s required power, the charger’s USB Power Delivery (USB PD) rating, and the cable’s rated wattage. For higher-power laptops, choose a suitably rated e-marked cable. Connector shape alone does not tell you charging speed.
I need to connect an external monitor
Confirm that your laptop’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt display output, and that the monitor or adapter supports the chosen resolution and refresh rate. A charge-only USB-C cable cannot carry video.
I need to transfer files quickly
Match the computer and drive’s supported USB data standards, then select a cable rated for the speed you need. Some USB-C cables support only USB 2.0 data rates. Real-world speed also depends on the drive and computer.
I need a desk dock for multiple devices
First list your monitors, peripherals, power requirements, and laptop ports. Check how bandwidth is shared across screens and data ports before selecting a dock.
