Apple has now explained what changed in tvOS 27, publishing detailed release notes after the software had already reached compatible Apple TV devices. The update is more substantial than its familiar interface might suggest: it adds Hi-Res Lossless playback and AutoMix in Apple Music, brings video podcasts to the TV, improves AirPlay, expands accessibility tools and gives households a new way to block individual apps.
tvOS 27 is a free software update for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation and later). Apple released the update on September 14, 2026, and published its fuller feature list on September 25.
Apple Music gets Hi-Res Lossless and AutoMix
The headline audio change is support for Hi-Res Lossless music at up to 24-bit/192 kHz. That is a higher-resolution option than standard lossless streaming, but it does not guarantee an audible improvement in every living room. Results will depend on the recording, the audio equipment connected to the Apple TV and the rest of the playback chain.
Apple Music also gains AutoMix. Apple describes the feature as using time stretching and beat matching to create DJ-like transitions between songs. It is intended to make playlists flow with fewer abrupt gaps, although the quality of any transition will still depend on the tracks being combined. Both features require an Apple Music subscription, and availability can vary by country or region.
Video podcasts move to the big screen
The Podcasts app has been redesigned and now supports video podcasts. That gives shows which publish both audio and video a native route to the television without relying on a separate streaming app or AirPlay. Audio-only programs remain available, so this is an expansion rather than a replacement for the existing podcast experience.
The update also refreshes the Music app. Apple’s Apple TV 4K user guide confirms the redesigned Music and Podcasts apps, along with the new high-resolution audio and AutoMix options.
Faster AirPlay and captions for more content
Apple says AirPlay is faster and more responsive in tvOS 27. The company has not published a universal speed figure, and actual behavior can depend on the sending device, Wi-Fi conditions and the receiving Apple TV. The practical goal is simpler: less delay when starting or controlling content sent from an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
A new transcribed-audio feature can display captions when a video does not already include standard subtitles or closed captions. This could make more clips understandable with the sound low or off, and it may improve access to material whose publisher did not supply captions. It is not the same as a professionally prepared subtitle track, however, and language support and transcription accuracy can vary.
Dynamic Text and per-app blocking
Dynamic Text lets viewers choose a preferred text size across supported apps. The words “supported apps” matter: developers still need to adopt the feature, so text will not necessarily change everywhere immediately.
For shared Apple TVs, tvOS 27 also adds controls for blocking individual apps in Settings. That is more precise than treating every app the same and could be useful for families, classrooms or common-room devices. Apple’s release notes do not turn the feature into a complete parental-control system, though; households should still review purchase permissions, account settings and the controls inside individual streaming services.
Which Apple TV models are supported?
Apple lists tvOS 27 for Apple TV 4K (2nd generation and later). That covers the second-generation Apple TV 4K and the current third-generation models. Owners can check for the update under Settings > System > Software Updates.
The current Apple TV 4K hardware remains unchanged. Apple sells a 64GB Wi-Fi model and a 128GB Wi-Fi-and-Ethernet model, both powered by the A15 Bionic chip. What this update does not change
tvOS 27 does not introduce a new Apple TV box, a new streaming subscription or a blanket quality upgrade for every song and video. Hi-Res Lossless depends on compatible content and equipment; Dynamic Text depends on app support; transcription can make mistakes; and Apple’s faster-AirPlay claim has not been independently quantified here.
